Until your name is out there and before you have complete portfolio created to show to clients, Elance is a great way to get work. Elance is a site for freelancers to bid on jobs. There are many categories to bid on work in. I recommend bidding on work in the “Web/Programming” section. There are so many jobs to bid on.

For those of you who will be following this blog because you want to learn web design and have the intention of making it a business need to make this first step. If you’ve been designing web sites for a while and already have a hosting account, please ignore this lesson.
- Decide on a Webhosting service. Look for the words Linux or PHP hosting. Even if you don’t know what Linux or PHP is make sure that the hosting pack you decide on is considered Linux or PHP hosting.
- Review web hosting packages to find the package that will meet your needs
- Decide on a Domain Name for your web design business
- Purchase the webhosting service that you decided on in #1 and when asked for the domain name you want to use, enter the domain name you decided on in step 3.
- Receive email from the Webhosting Company with FTP information that you will need for future tutorials on this site.
Please note that in step 5, some webhosting services such as GoDaddy, you may have to take additional steps to actually set up the FTP service. GoDaddy is not necessarily a hosting service for beginners.
Some webhosting services that I recommend are:
Godaddy.com
(for intermediate users)
Hostmonster.com
DailyRazor.com

Some have said, “Anyone can design a web page.” This isn’t neccessarily true. One may be able to post a page of information up to the internet but will that page be interactive, meaningful, draw users to comment? Well the goal of this website is to teach you methods of design that will do those things.
